OVD Release Notes 3.5.0 Summary

We are excited to announce the latest minor release of Inuvika OVD Enterprise 3.5.0, which includes several new features and enhancements

What's new in 3.5.0

This release includes a variety of enhancements and features that make our software more scalable, easier to deploy and manage.

Local App Access

You can now register file extensions on the Application Server so that when users open those files inside an OVD session, they seamlessly launch using the matching application on the user's local computer (for example, Microsoft Excel files inside the OVD session will load directly into Microsoft Excel running on the end user device). This "Local App Access" style capability reduces latency for locally installed apps, improves user familiarity, and lets administrators fine tune what opens remotely versus locally.

Single User Windows Server Functionality

Support has been added for single-session administrative access to Windows Server, allowing administrators to connect using the built-in remote session functionality for management and maintenance, without the need for RDS CALs or Remote Desktop Services roles. This capability is limited to administrative use and does not provide multi-user desktops or applications.

Protocol Enhancements

OVD has moved from FreeRDP 2.x to a heavily customised branch based on the latest FreeRDP 3.x. This upgrade provides a significantly more modern RDP stack, delivering measurable performance improvements, access to newer protocol features, and a stronger foundation for future enhancements. The move also improves long-term maintainability and positions OVD to adopt upcoming RDP capabilities more rapidly.

SAML2 Passwordless Authentication

OVD now supports passwordless SAML2 SSO authentication for domain users. By adding a Certificate Authority (CA) in Active Directory to trust the Session Manager for authentication, users can seamlessly log into OVD sessions without typing their password a second time. This streamlines the login experience while maintaining enterprise security standards through federated identity management.

Enhanced Application Mode

Multiple fixes and improvements deliver a noticeably smoother Application Mode experience in the Enterprise Desktop Client for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Users benefit from better keyboard detection and pass through, stable window sizing/z order management, cleaner quit behavior on macOS, and improved seamless rendering. Together these changes make published applications feel more native.

Rich Clipboard and Content Interoperability

Extended clipboard format support now includes rich text and file copy. Combined with multiple clipboard reliability fixes, workflows involving formatted documents and file transfers are more consistent and productive.

Metrics Backend Flexibility

In addition to existing InfluxDB support, OVD can now use TDEngine as a configurable metrics backend. This broadens options for organizations standardizing on different time series platforms.

Security and Policy Streamlining

Kerberos authentication support has been removed due to complex configuration and compatibility issues. We recommend adopting SAML 2.0 for modern, federated authentication workflows. Session password storage is now encrypted, HTTP is auto redirected to HTTPS for AC/OWA/OUC, and Windows Service hardening resolves a reported vulnerability. Administrators may optionally disable the session lockdown we perform on Windows based systems when less restrictive sessions are required, whilst still maintaining overall governance.

Directory & Identity Reliability

Active Directory and LDAP integrations are more robust: primary group membership retrieval fixed, user listing issues resolved, view stability improved, and LDAP SSL configuration simplified. These changes reduce friction during user provisioning and ongoing directory maintenance. It also means you can publish applications etc to the default Domain Users group now which was historically not possible.

Operational & Administrative Usability

Global administrator monitoring has been expanded, session management has been improved with optional group hints for Application Servers, and the tenant and admin interfaces have been streamlined by removing duplicate tenant selections and making Active Sessions views more stable.A contextual link now guides admins to create a server group when none exists, and the sessions report API returns leaner datasets for faster downstream processing.

The OVD Admin Console now displays logs and timestamps in the server’s local timezone rather than UTC, improving readability and making event timing easier to interpret during day-to-day administration.

The OVD File Server has been updated to remove its reliance on /mnt for storage. This change is particularly beneficial for deployments on cloud platforms such as Azure and AWS, where /mnt is commonly backed by non-persistent or ephemeral storage. By avoiding this path, the File Server behaves more predictably in cloud environments and reduces the risk of unexpected data loss or disruption. There have also been improvements to the OVD User Profile mechanism allowing Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome profiles to be retained correctly.

Client Functionality, Device & Peripheral Experience

Improved disk redirection selection, optional thumbnail disabling for compatibility control, added improved drive redirection channel, and fixes to printer detection with both long and non ASCII usernames collectively enhance everyday file and print operations. Gateway ping support aids in connection reliability when using proxies.

The Magic Toolbar has been enhanced with a dedicated Ctrl + Alt + Del option, making common administrative actions easier to access. Keyboard passthrough has also been improved, with better support for Windows key combinations and Print Screen, ensuring a more natural and predictable keyboard experience within sessions.

64 Bit Windows EDC and Apple Silicon Support

The Enterprise Desktop Client (EDC) for Windows is now 64-Bit native for enhanced performance. We have also rewritten the EDC for Mac to be Apple Silicon native removing the need for Rosetta and improving the overall performance and stability of the client.
